What Are You Reading?

Screen shot of my Shelfari bookshelf, taken by my iphone.
I've been lurking around some online discussion groups lately, on the "What are you reading?" threads. This seems to be one of the most popular topics on sites like Kindle Boards and Shelfari, and members never seem to get sick of it. The discussions go on and on with thousands of posts. On Shelfari, I joined a group of sci-fi readers discussing the topic. I thought I'd get tired of hearing about people's reading choices, or run out of things to say about my own, but it's endlessly fascinating. I'm getting lots of good reading recommendations, but more than that, I'm getting to talk about books and authors I love, and understand why others love what they do. Sometimes, we female sci-fi readers feel like outsiders, but I don't anymore; I've found so many kindred spirits out there. Not only is reading not considered nerdy any more, (if it ever was) but reading sci-fi doesn't seem to be either.

So I ask you to comment on this blog and let me know: what are you reading? Any genre, any author. I'm dying to hear!

  1. OK, I'll start. I always read several things at once, among them: The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy; Ilium, by Dan Simmons, and a book about the history of Siena, as research for my third novel. I highly recommend the first two, the last one, well, let's just say it's a little dry.

  2. I just read 2032 by A. S. Anand and I can't recommend it highly enough. It's a sci-fi dystopia kind of book but so funny and tender at the same time. It's the first book of any genre I've read in a long time that made me think the author was a genius.

And I've read some really great books recently!!

  3. I am reading book three of The Game of Thrones series. It is epic, it's not my usual genre, the third is 1000 pages, only slightly longer than the first two (each 800+) and I CAN'T STOP!

  4. Erm - New Moon? Yes, really. In mitigation, it's an old review copy so I didn't actually pay for it. To be fair, if you take it for what it is, it's not a bad book. Lined up I have a fantasy trilogy by Fiona McIntosh and a Sarah Pinborough novel - all for review.

  5. I'm reading Xenocide (Orsen Scott Card) at the moment. I adored Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead. Xenocide isn't quite up to par with the first two, but it's clipping along at a good pace.

  6. I love that trilogy by Orson Scott Card. It's a brilliant masterpiece of fiction.

  7. I am a very eclectic reader but I love history and learning things when I read. Well I read Georgina's book Time Baroness, and Daughters of Iraq. Both books sent me into different worlds which I love. I also love humor and on a Kindle UK board I found Danny Gillian a Glasgow writer. My husband is from there so it is fun to see the places we go to mentioned.
